  11.   Screen Ruler is a great virtual ruler ready to be dragged around 
  12.   on the desktop. Very useful to measure things on the computer 
  13.   screen in Pixels, Inches, Picas and Centimeters. Accurate 
  14.   measurements with dynamic cursor display, vertical or horizontal 
  15.   orientation, with a custom length feature.
  16.  
  17.   Some features you should know:
  18.  
  19.   • Clicking the little "ruler" icon, flips the ruler direction 
  20.     from horizontal to vertical and vice versa. The ruler pivots on 
  21.     the zero point, unless the zero point is within 30 pixels from 
  22.     the menubar or the screen edges. Flip it again (you can type -F) 
  23.     to make it reorient its direction. If the ruler is in a position 
  24.     such that flipping it would put it out of the screen area, then 
  25.     it flips itself remaining into view.

  27.   • -P will change ruler to Pixels, -I will change it to Inches, 
  28.     -K will change it to Picas and -M will change it to Centimeters.
  29.  
  30.   • Using the arrow keys, will make the ruler move in the 
  31.     appropriate direction by one pixel. It makes a "click" sound 
  32.     as it moves.
  33.  
  34.   • Pressing the Option Key, will change the cursor (in accordance 
  35.     with the ruler’s direction) to a horizontal or vertical line and 
  36.     a little number. The number on the cursor corresponds to the 
  37.     readings of pixels/inches/picas/centimeters in between the 
  38.     marked settings on the ruler. This way you can readily make 
  39.     precise readings without figuring the small markings.
  40.  
  41.     Note 1: Due to inherited fractional nature of the inch setting, 
  42.     some limitation was imposed as to the smallest fraction cursor 
  43.     to display when the Option Key is pressed.
  44.  
  45.     Note 2: Because the conversion between pixels on the screen and 
  46.     centimeter markings would result in fractional pixels (drawing can 
  47.     only occur on the pixel line), some slight adjustment was made as 
  48.     to where the centimeter markings should be drawn. Because of this, 
  49.     I decided not to draw millimeter markings. Instead, use the Option 
  50.     Key to change the cursor to a number preceded by a dot, as 
  51.     millimeter fractions of a centimeter. This is a bit more accurate. 
  52.     The value carried over via the Clipboard is even more accurate.

  54.   • Clicking on the ruler’s "Checkered" icon will cycle thru all the 
  55.     settings. That is, if the present setting is Pixels, it will 
  56.     change to display inches and so on.
  57.  
  58.         • Clicking the left most square, will close and quit the 
  59.                 Screen Ruler application.
  60.  
  61.   • Clicking on the right most icon (the one with the double arrow)
  62.     allows you to drag the mouse horizontally to establish the ruler's
  63.     new custom length. Its minimum length allowed is 240 pixels.

  65.         • Click anywhere on the yellow part of the ruler and drag to 
  66.                 where you need it.
  67.  
  68.   • When you close the ruler, the setting (Pixel, Inch, Pica or
  69.     Centimeter) and the length value are saved within the application. 
  70.     The saved vales are used the next time around. Even though you can
  71.     run Screen Ruler from a locked volume (such as a CD-ROM), you won't
  72.     be able to save these values.
  73.  
  74. Next Version
  75.   Pending feedback and registration from you, the user, I plan to 
  76.   further enhance Screen Ruler. So please send in your registration 
  77.   fee to guarantee early notification of new releases. If you need 
  78.   a PowerPC native version, please consider upgrading.

  80. About Shareware
  81.   Programming a friendly interface like the Mac is no trivial task. 
  82.   Nevertheless, by most accounts, only a small percentage (2% to 4%) 
  83.   of habitual users of shareware send in their registration fees. 
  84.   Given the small amount involved, it won't bankrupt you but it will 
  85.   go a long way to help the author improve it. It will also maintain 
  86.   shareware's unique viability. Please keep it alive. Don't let it die.

  88.   Towards that end, I have built-in a subtle and friendly reminder 
  89.   that will appear every so often, when you run an unregistered 
  90.   version of Screen Ruler.

  92.   For your convenience, registrations for Screen Ruler are handled by 
  93.   the Kagi Shareware service run by Kee Nethery <kee@kagi.com>. 
  94.   In addition to cash in various currencies and US checks drawn on US 
  95.   banks, Kagi Shareware also accepts credit card registrations by mail, 
  96.   fax, or e-mail (your card number is scrambled). For organizations, 
  97.   they handle invoices and site licenses, too. For more information, 
  98.   run the enclosed "Register" program. It creates a customized 
  99.   registration form and tells you where to send it. Quick and simple.

  104.   Admittedly, many ideas you may have regarding this software may 
  105.   be better than mine. Please share your thoughts. I urge you to
